Imuris is a town in the northern part of Sonora, a state in Mexico. It is the main town, or "municipal seat," of the Imuris Municipality.

Where Imuris Is Located

Imuris is an important town for travel. It sits right on Federal Highway 15. This long road connects Nogales, near the USA/Mexico border, all the way to Mexico City.

A railroad line also runs through Imuris. This line links Nogales and the USA to Mexico's train network. Imuris is also where Federal Highway 2 crosses. This road goes east towards the state of Chihuahua and the city of Ciudad Juárez. Ciudad Juárez is across the Río Grande river from El Paso, Texas in the USA.

A Look at Imuris History

The land where Imuris is now was once home to the Pimas Altos people. In 1687, a Jesuit missionary named Eusebio Francisco Kino founded the town. He named it San José de Imuris.

The name "Imuris" comes from the Pima language. It might mean "Plateau between rivers" or "hills shaped like flint."
