Île Jésus (which means Jesus Island) is a large river island located in southwestern Quebec, Canada. It's separated from the northern mainland by the Rivière des Mille Îles. To its south, the Rivière des Prairies separates it from the Island of Montreal.
This island is the second-largest in the Hochelaga Archipelago. Only the Island of Montreal is bigger. Île Jésus covers about 242 square kilometers (93 square miles). It is the main part of the City of Laval, along with the Îles Laval and other smaller islands.
Even though it's home to a big city, parts of Île Jésus are still rural. Most of the urban area is in the center of the island. You'll also find many developed areas along the south and west river banks.
Discovering Île Jésus
Île Jésus is a unique place because it's an entire city on an island! It's a mix of busy city life and quiet natural spaces. The island's location between two rivers makes it a special part of Quebec's geography.
The City of Laval
The City of Laval covers all of Île Jésus and some nearby islands. It's one of Quebec's biggest cities. Laval was created by combining many smaller towns and villages that used to be separate. This happened to make the area easier to manage and develop.
Past Towns and Villages
Before Laval became one big city, Île Jésus was made up of many different towns. These towns eventually joined together to form the city we know today. Here are some of the former towns that are now neighborhoods within Laval:
- Auteuil
- Chomedey
- Duvernay
- Fabreville
- Îles Laval
- Laval-Ouest
- Laval-des-Rapides
- Laval-sur-le-Lac
- Pont-Viau
- Saint-François
- Saint-Vincent-de-Paul
- Sainte-Dorothée
- Sainte-Rose
- Vimont
