The Rivière des Mille Îles (which means "Thousand Islands River" in French) is a cool river channel in Quebec, Canada. It's like a watery highway that connects the Ottawa River to the Rivière des Prairies. This river is about 42 kilometers (26 miles) long.
About the Mille Îles River
This river acts as a natural border. It separates Île Jésus (where the city of Laval is located) from the "North Shore." The North Shore is home to several towns north of Montreal, like Deux-Montagnes, Saint-Eustache, and Terrebonne.
Where the River Flows
The Rivière des Mille Îles starts at the narrow part of the Lake of Two Mountains. This is where the Ottawa River gets wider before it flows into the St. Lawrence River near Montreal.
The river flows from west to east. It eventually joins the Rivière des Prairies at the eastern tip of Île Jésus. After that, the Rivière des Prairies also connects with the St. Lawrence River near the eastern tip of the Island of Montreal.
Islands in the River
Just like its name suggests, the Rivière des Mille Îles has many small islands! These islands are part of a larger group called the Hochelaga Archipelago.
It's important not to confuse this river with the famous Thousand Islands area. That other group of islands is located much further away, at the start of the St. Lawrence River, between Ontario in Canada and New York State in the USA.
