Ömer Çelik was born on June 15, 1968. He is a Turkish journalist and a well-known politician. He has held several important roles in the Turkish government. From 2013 to 2015, he served as the Minister of Culture and Tourism. Later, from 2016 to 2018, he became the Minister of European Union Affairs. During this time, he was also the Chief Negotiator for Turkish Accession to the European Union. This meant he led talks about Turkey joining the European Union.
Early Life and Education
Ömer Çelik was born in Adana, Turkey. His parents are Ziya and Dudu Çelik. He went to Gazi University and studied economics and administrative sciences. After finishing his first degree, he continued his studies. He earned a master's degree in political science from the same university.
Before starting his political career, Ömer Çelik worked as a journalist. He also used his knowledge as a political scientist. He later joined the Justice and Development Party (AKP). He became an important advisor to the party's leader.
A Career in Politics
Ömer Çelik began his political journey by being elected to the Turkish Parliament. He represented the city of Adana. He was elected three times in a row. These elections were in 2002, 2007, and 2011. Since 2010, he has also served as the Deputy Chairman. In this role, he was in charge of foreign affairs for his party. He also led the Friendship Group for relations between Turkey and the United States.
On January 24, 2013, Ömer Çelik was given a new important job. He was appointed as the Minister of Culture and Tourism. He took over this role from Ertuğrul Günay. This appointment was made by the Prime Minister at the time, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
