100 North Tampa is a very tall building, called a skyscraper, located in Tampa, Florida, USA. It used to be known as the Regions Building and the AmSouth Building.
This building is 579 feet (176 m) tall and has 42 floors. It stands in Downtown Tampa. 100 North Tampa is currently the tallest building in Tampa. It is also one of the tallest buildings in the whole state of Florida.
The building was designed by a company called HKS, Inc., which has its main office in Dallas, Texas. 100 North Tampa is an example of a building style called postmodern architecture. Many different companies have their offices here, including Regions Bank, American International Group, KPMG, and the law firm Holland & Knight.
Building History
Construction for 100 North Tampa started in May 1990 with a special ceremony. The building was finished and opened in June 1992. John Herrick helped with the engineering and surveying work for the building.
It was first planned to be called the Citizens and Southern Bank Plaza. However, when it opened in 1992, it was named the AmSouth Building. This was because AmSouth Bancorporation was its main tenant, meaning they rented a lot of space there.
Later, on May 25, 2005, AmSouth joined with Regions Bank. Because of this, the building's name changed to the Regions Building. But soon after, the owners decided to call it by its street address, which is 100 North Tampa.
How Tall Is It?
At 579 feet (176 m) tall, 100 North Tampa is the tallest building in Tampa. This 42-story tower is also the tallest building along Florida's Gulf Coast. It is one of the tallest buildings in Florida, outside of Miami and Jacksonville.
Around 2006, there were plans for a new building called Trump Tower Tampa. It was expected to be even taller than 100 North Tampa, reaching 593 feet (181 m) with 52 floors. Construction for Trump Tower began in mid-2006. However, the work stopped in September 2006 because of problems with the soil where it was being built. The Trump Tower Tampa project was eventually canceled because not enough people wanted to buy apartments there. This meant 100 North Tampa remained the tallest building in the city.
Building Design
100 North Tampa has a unique look. Its outside walls, called the façade, are made of glass that looks like pewter and Spanish Rosa Dante granite.
The building is a good example of postmodern architecture. This style often mixes old and new ideas. For example, the roof of 100 North Tampa looks like something from Gothic buildings. It also has granite cornices, which are decorative ledges. There are also parts of the building that step back, called setbacks, on the 38th and 40th floors. You can also see two large granite arches, 40-foot (12 m) tall, at the building's two entrances.
