  • A strong new castle, Pembroke Castle, was built in Wales. Castles like this were very important for protection in those times.
  • In Valence, France, a large church called a cathedral was officially opened for religious services.
  • Coloman became the new King of Hungary.
  • In March, the Byzantine Emperor Alexius I Comnenus sent messengers to Pope Urban II. They met at a big meeting called the Council of Piacenza. The Emperor wanted to talk about getting help to fight against a group of people known as the Seljuk Turks. He hoped to hire soldiers (mercenaries) to help him.
  • On November 18, another very important meeting began. It was called the Council of Clermont. Pope Urban II organized this meeting. The main topic was to discuss sending a large group of people on a religious journey, known as the First Crusade, to a place called the Holy Land. The Holy Land is a special place for many religions.
  • Later in November, Pope Urban II officially announced the First Crusade at the Council of Clermont. He encouraged many people to join. Around this time, a religious leader named Peter the Hermit also started traveling across France, telling people about the Crusade.
  • On November 28, the last day of the Council of Clermont, Pope Urban II chose two leaders for the First Crusade. They were Bishop Adhemar of Le Puy and Count Raymond IV of Toulouse. Their job was to lead the journey to the Holy Land.
