In 1305, Scotland was going through a difficult period. The country did not have its own monarch, which is a king or queen. This meant there was no single ruler for Scotland at this time.
Important Meetings in 1305
- May: A special meeting called a parliament took place in Perth. During this meeting, Scottish leaders chose people to represent Scotland. These chosen people would then go to the English parliament in Westminster. This was a way for Scotland to have a voice in some decisions.
- September: Another important parliament meeting happened. This meeting lasted for 20 days. The leaders worked together to create new rules for how Scotland would be managed. These rules were called an "ordinance." John of Brittany was chosen to be a "Guardian" for Scotland. He was like a temporary leader. He had help from a group of 22 important Scottish nobles, who were called aristocrats.
A Scottish Hero Captured
- August 5: A Scottish knight named John de Menteith captured William Wallace. John de Menteith was loyal to King Edward of England. He handed William Wallace over to English soldiers in a place called Robroyston. William Wallace was a very important leader for the Scottish people. He fought for Scotland's freedom.
A Special Book from Scotland
Around this time, a Scottish doctor named Bernard Gordon wrote a short book. It was called Lilium medicinae. This book was very important because it was the first known book by a Scot to ever be printed. It was printed much later, around the year 1480, in Paris.
Sad News in 1305
- August 23: William Wallace passed away. He was a landowner and a brave leader who fought against English rule. He was executed in London, which means he was put to death by the government.
