Building History
Design and Construction
The building was designed by Emery Roth and Sons. This architecture firm is from New York City. Tishman Properties, also from New York City, was the company that developed the building.
Work on the building started in March 1958. It opened to the public in April 1959. The building also has a large parking garage for 600 cars. This garage is connected to the main tower.
The building was built where an old Greyhound bus station used to be. Greyhound moved to a new bus terminal in 1948.
The East Ohio Gas Company
For many years, the building was home to East Ohio Gas. This company supplied natural gas to Cleveland. They had a customer center in the lobby. Here, people could pay their bills. They also had displays showing how natural gas appliances worked. A special meter showed how much natural gas was being sent to Cleveland.
New Owners and Historic Status
In November 2006, a company called Sovereign Partners, LLC bought the building. They paid about $12 million for it. At that time, much of the building was empty. The new owners planned to make improvements.
On January 23, 2013, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is an important historical site.
Becoming Apartments
Plans for New Homes
In March 2012, plans were announced to turn the building into apartments. This project would create 223 apartments. This would help fill empty spaces in the downtown area. It would also meet a high demand for new places to live.
Once finished, it would become the tallest building in Cleveland used only for homes.
The K & D Group Project
The K & D Group bought the 21-story building. They signed a contract to buy it. The company planned to open the first apartments in July 2014. They expected to finish the whole project by August 2015. The total cost for this big change was about $65 million.
