The 1886 United Kingdom general election was a big election held in the UK from July 1 to July 27, 1886. It happened because a plan to give Ireland more control over its own government, called the Government of Ireland Bill, was not approved.

This election completely changed the results of the previous election in 1885. The Conservatives, led by Lord Salisbury, teamed up with a new group called the Liberal Unionists. These Liberal Unionists were a part of the Liberal Party who disagreed with the plan for Ireland.

The Liberal Unionists, led by Lord Hartington and Joseph Chamberlain, won 77 seats. They helped the Conservatives get enough seats to make decisions in Parliament. However, they did not officially join the Conservative government.

William Ewart Gladstone's Liberals, who supported the idea of Home Rule for Ireland, and their allies, the Irish Parliamentary Party led by Charles Stewart Parnell, came in a distant second place. This split in the Liberal Party meant they were no longer the main political power. Before this, they had been in charge for 18 out of 27 years since 1859. After 1886, they would only be in power for three of the next nineteen years. This election was also the first time since 1841 that the Conservatives won the most votes overall.
