Commodus was born in 161 AD. He was the son of the famous Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Marcus Aurelius was known as a wise and good ruler. Commodus became emperor in 180 AD after his father died. He was only 19 years old when he took power.

Commodus's Rule

At first, Commodus ruled alongside his father. After his father's death, he became the sole emperor. He ended some wars that his father had been fighting. This brought peace to the empire for a while. However, Commodus was different from his father. He was more interested in gladiator games and entertainment. He even fought in the arena himself. This was very unusual for a Roman emperor.

The End of Commodus's Reign

As time went on, Commodus became less popular. Many people in Rome were unhappy with his leadership. He made some decisions that worried the Roman Senate. The Senate was a powerful group of advisors. They felt he was not ruling wisely.

On December 31, 192 AD, Commodus died. His death was a secret plot. It involved people close to him. He was killed in his palace in Rome. His death ended the Nerva-Antonine dynasty. This was a line of emperors that had ruled for almost 100 years.

What Happened After?

The death of Commodus caused a lot of chaos. There was no clear person to take his place. Several powerful people tried to become emperor. This led to a period of civil war. It was a very unstable time for the Roman Empire. This period is sometimes called the "Year of the Five Emperors." It showed how important a strong leader was for Rome.
