The 1927 Detroit Stars baseball team played in the Negro National League (NNL) during the 1927 baseball season. This league was important for African-American players. The team won 52 games and lost 47, finishing fifth in the NNL. The Stars played their home games at Mack Park in Detroit. The team was owned by John A. Roesink and managed by Bingo DeMoss.

Turkey Stearnes: The Batting Star

Turkey Stearnes, who played center field, was the team's biggest star at the plate. He was one of the best players in the Negro National League.

He was a top hitter in many ways:

  • He hit 12 triples, which was tied for first in the league.
  • He hit 19 home runs, ranking second.
  • He had a .690 slugging percentage, also second best. This means he hit for a lot of power.
  • He hit 25 doubles, placing him second.
  • He scored 79 runs, ranking fourth.
  • He had a .429 on-base percentage, which was fifth best. This shows how often he got on base.
  • He walked 46 times, ranking fifth.
  • His batting average was .350, placing him seventh.

Turkey Stearnes was so good that he was later added to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000.

Other Great Hitters

The Stars had other strong hitters too:

  • Ed Rile played first base and was a fantastic hitter. He had the team's best batting average at .389, which was the third highest in the NNL. He also hit 23 doubles, eight triples, and 11 home runs. Ed Rile also pitched sometimes!
  • Cristóbal Torriente played right field. He played in 88 games and had a .313 batting average. He also brought in 62 runs for his team. Cristóbal Torriente was also inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006.
  • Harry Kenyon played left field. Even though he only played in 24 games, he had a strong .338 batting average.
  • Johnny Jones also played left field. In 32 games, he hit for a .336 batting average.

Yellowhorse Morris

Yellowhorse Morris was a busy pitcher for the Stars. He played in 27 games and started 17 of them. He won 14 games and lost 8. His earned run average (ERA) was 3.16, which is a measure of how many runs a pitcher allows per game. He also struck out 77 batters.

Andy Cooper

Andy Cooper was another important pitcher. He played in 12 games and started 9 of them. He won 4 games and lost 4. His ERA was 4.40, and he struck out 32 batters. Andy Cooper was also inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006, showing how talented he was.
