The 2012 Pacific hurricane season was a time when many strong storms formed in the Pacific Ocean. It officially started on May 15, 2012, in the eastern Pacific and June 1, 2012, in the central Pacific. It ended on November 30. These dates are usually when most tropical cyclones, which are like big spinning storms, form in the northeastern Pacific Ocean. However, Tropical Storm Aletta formed a little earlier, on May 14.

Key Storms of the 2012 Season
This season saw several powerful storms. Some of them caused a lot of damage or were very strong.
Hurricane Bud: The First Big Storm
Hurricane Bud was the first major hurricane of the season. It was one of three storms that grew into a hurricane during May.
Hurricane Carlotta: Impact on Mexico
In the middle of June, Hurricane Carlotta hit land near Puerto Escondido, Mexico. This storm caused the deaths of seven people. It also led to damage that cost about US$107.7 million.
Hurricane Paul: Damage in Baja California
Later in the season, Hurricane Paul caused significant damage in Baja California Sur. This area is a state in Mexico.
Hurricane Emilia: The Strongest Storm
Hurricane Emilia was the only storm to reach Category 4 strength. This means it was an extremely powerful hurricane. It started as a Tropical Depression near the coast of Mexico. It then grew stronger, first becoming a Category 3 hurricane, and then reaching Category 4.
