The 2017-18 NHL season was a big year for the National Hockey League (NHL). It was the 101st season the league had been around, and the 100th time teams actually played games! Thirty-one teams competed, each playing 82 games during the regular season.
The regular season started on October 4, 2017, and wrapped up on April 7, 2018. After that, the exciting Stanley Cup playoffs began. The final championship series, known as the Stanley Cup Finals, was played between the Washington Capitals and the Vegas Golden Knights. The Capitals won, earning their very first Stanley Cup in the team's history!
A new team, the Vegas Golden Knights, joined the league this season. They made history by winning their first three games ever. They continued their amazing start with five wins and only one loss. This was the best start for a new team since the Montreal Canadiens did it way back in the NHL's very first season (1917–18).
