2019 Bolivian political crisis facts for kids
On 10 November 2019, people in Bolivia had been protesting for 21 days. These protests started after the election results in October 2019 were questioned. A group called the Organization of American States (OAS) looked into the election and found problems with how it was run. Because of these issues, groups of workers (called trade unions), the army, and the police in Bolivia asked President Evo Morales to step down.
President Morales resigned and was offered a safe place in another country the next day, which he accepted. On 12 November, Jeanine Áñez, who was a senator and the next person in line, became the new president. Morales and his supporters said that what happened was a coup, which means a sudden takeover of the government. Morales also told people in Bolivia not to accept Áñez as their leader.
