The 2019 presidential election in Tunisia was a big event. People voted to choose their new president. This election was special because it happened earlier than planned. It was also the second time Tunisians directly voted for their president since their revolution in 2011.

Why the Election Happened Early

The election was first planned for November 2019. But the president at the time, Beji Caid Essebsi, sadly passed away on July 25, 2019. Tunisia's rules say that a new president must take office within 90 days if the current one leaves office early. Because of this, the election dates were moved up to make sure a new leader was chosen quickly.

How the Election Worked

Tunisia uses a "two-round system" for its presidential elections.

  • In the first round, all candidates compete.
  • If no candidate wins more than half of the votes, the top two candidates move to a second round.
  • The person who gets the most votes in the second round wins the election.

In the first round on September 15, 2019, no one won more than half the votes. So, the two candidates with the most votes went to a second round. These two were Kaïs Saïed and Nabil Karoui. The second round took place on October 13, 2019.

The Winners

In the second round, Kaïs Saïed won by a very large margin. He became the new president of Tunisia.
