2020 Aegean Sea earthquake facts for kids
The 2020 Aegean Sea earthquake was a very strong earthquake that happened on October 30, 2020. It struck about 14 km (8.7 mi) northeast of the island of Samos, Greece. This earthquake was a magnitude 7.0, which means it released a lot of energy and caused strong shaking.
The earthquake caused many buildings to be damaged, and some even completely collapsed. In the Turkish city of İzmir, dozens of buildings were either damaged or fell down.
Sadly, people were killed and injured in both Greece and Turkey. In Greece, 2 people died, and 19 more were hurt. In Turkey, 25 people lost their lives, and 804 others were injured.
A tsunami (a series of large ocean waves) later hit several islands, including Ikaria, Kos, Chios, and Samos. It also reached İzmir, where it tragically killed one person.
