On March 2, 2020, Israel held its legislative elections. These elections chose the members of the 23rd Knesset. The Knesset is Israel's parliament, where laws are made.

This election was special because it was the third one in less than a year. Usually, elections happen every four years. However, the previous elections did not result in a clear government.

What is a Legislative Election?

A legislative election is when people vote for representatives. These representatives then form a government. In Israel, they vote for members of the Knesset. The Knesset has 120 seats. A party or group of parties needs 61 seats to form a majority government.

Why Did Israel Vote So Soon?

Israel had elections in April 2019 and September 2019. After both of those elections, no political party or group of parties could form a stable government. This meant that the country was run by a "caretaker government." This is a temporary government that stays in power until a new one is formed. Because no government could be formed, new elections had to be called. This 2020 election was the third attempt to create a stable government.

Who Won the 2020 Election?

Many political parties took part in the election. The two largest parties were Likud and Blue and White.

Other parties also won seats, including Joint List, Shas, and United Torah Judaism.

Forming a New Government

After the election, it was still hard to form a government. No single party had enough seats to rule alone. Political parties often need to work together. They form alliances to get the 61 seats needed for a majority.

On April 20, 2020, Benny Gantz and Benjamin Netanyahu made an important announcement. Their parties, Blue and White and Likud, agreed to form a "unity government." This means they would share power.

The agreement stated that Netanyahu would be Prime Minister first. Gantz would be Vice Prime Minister. Then, in October 2021, Gantz would become Prime Minister. This deal aimed to bring stability to Israel's government.
