In September 2023, a short but intense conflict happened in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. This area is recognized by most countries as part of Azerbaijan. However, many Armenians live there.
From September 19 to 20, Azerbaijan launched a military attack. This action went against a ceasefire agreement made in 2020. The attack targeted the region of Artsakh, which is a self-declared state within Nagorno-Karabakh.
This fighting happened during a difficult time. Azerbaijan had been blocking supplies to Artsakh. This blockade caused shortages of important things like food and medicine.
On September 20, just one day after the fighting started, a new agreement was made. This agreement aimed to stop all fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh. It was helped by Russian peacekeepers.
Azerbaijan and representatives from the Armenian community in Artsakh met on September 21. They discussed the future of the region. Despite the ceasefire, some violations were reported by Artsakh and local people.

Understanding the Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict
The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is a long-standing disagreement. It is about land and different ethnic groups. The main groups involved are Armenia and Azerbaijan.
The region of Nagorno-Karabakh is mostly home to ethnic Armenians. However, it is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan. Artsakh, a self-declared state, controls part of this region. Azerbaijan controls other parts.
How the Conflict Began
The conflict became more serious in 1988. At that time, Armenians in Karabakh asked to join Armenia. This led to the First Nagorno-Karabakh War.
In late 2020, a major conflict called the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War took place. Thousands of people were hurt or killed. Azerbaijan won this war.
The 2020 Ceasefire Agreement
After the 2020 war, a ceasefire agreement was signed on November 10. This agreement meant Armenia and Artsakh lost control of some areas. These areas included land around Nagorno-Karabakh and part of Nagorno-Karabakh itself.
Even after the 2020 ceasefire, there have been smaller fights. These ceasefire violations have caused more injuries and deaths. They have happened in Nagorno-Karabakh and along the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
What is Happening Now?
Since the 2020 war, Azerbaijan has changed its stance. It no longer offers a special status for Armenians living in the region. Instead, Azerbaijan wants them to become part of Azerbaijan.
However, international groups and human rights organizations have concerns. They believe that Armenians in Artsakh should have the right to decide their own future. They also worry about the safety of Armenians living under the current government in Azerbaijan.
