2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war facts for kids
The 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War was a conflict between the armed forces of Azerbaijan and Armenia. It took place in and around the region of Nagorno-Karabakh. This war was the most recent major event in the long-running Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
The fighting started on September 27, 2020. It began along the Nagorno-Karabakh Line of Contact, which is the border between the two sides. Both Armenia and Azerbaijan reported that soldiers and civilians were hurt or killed. Because of the fighting, Armenia and the Republic of Artsakh declared a curfew (a rule to stay indoors). They also put in place martial law (military control) and called for total mobilization (getting all available people ready for war). Azerbaijan also introduced martial law and a curfew.
On September 28, Azerbaijan called for partial mobilization. This meant some people were asked to join the military.
On October 10, Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed to a ceasefire. This meant they would stop fighting for a short time.
The war officially ended on November 9, 2020. With help from Russian President Vladimir Putin, Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a peace treaty in Moscow. The war stopped the very next day.
What Was the War About?
The Nagorno-Karabakh region has been a source of conflict for a long time. Both Armenia and Azerbaijan claim the area as their own. The 2020 war was a major part of this ongoing disagreement. It led to significant changes in who controlled different parts of the region.
How the War Ended
The peace treaty signed on November 9, 2020, was very important. It set out new rules for the region. One key part of the agreement was about transportation.
New Transport Links
The agreement stated that all economic and transport links in the region should be opened up. Armenia promised to make sure that transport links between western Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic were safe. This would allow people, vehicles, and goods to move freely. Russian border guards from the FSB would help control these transport routes. The agreement also mentioned building new transport connections. These new links would connect the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic directly with other parts of Azerbaijan.
