The 2024 Chicago Marathon was the 46th time this famous running event took place. It happened on October 13, 2024, in Chicago, Illinois. This race is one of the biggest and best marathons in the world. It is part of a special series called the World Marathon Majors, which includes six huge marathons held each year. The Chicago Marathon is also known as a "platinum label" race, meaning it's one of the highest-ranked races globally.
More than 120,000 people wanted to run in the 2024 Chicago Marathon! Organizers expected over 50,000 runners to finish, which would be a new record. Before the race started, everyone took a moment of silence to remember Kelvin Kiptum. He was the winner of the 2023 race and held the world record for the marathon. He sadly passed away in February 2024.

About the Chicago Marathon
The Chicago Marathon is known as one of the fastest marathon courses. This is because the course is very flat, and the weather in autumn is usually perfect for running. Many amazing runners have set new world records here. In fact, six world records have been broken at the Chicago Marathon! The most recent one was in 2023, when Kelvin Kiptum set a new world record with an incredible time of 2 hours, 0 minutes, and 35 seconds.
Who Competed?
Many top runners from around the world came to Chicago to compete in the 2024 marathon.
Men's Race
One of the main stars in the men's race was Kenyan runner Amos Kipruto. He had a personal best time of 2 hours, 3 minutes, and 13 seconds, and he won the 2022 London Marathon. Another strong runner from Kenya was Vincent Ngetich, who had the same personal best time and finished second at the 2023 Berlin Marathon.
From the United States, Zach Panning was the fastest American runner in the race. He had finished 6th at the 2024 Olympic Trials and completed the 2022 Chicago Marathon in 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 28 seconds. Daniel Ebenyo from Kenya ran his first marathon in Chicago. He had previously finished second in the 10,000-meter run at the 2023 World Athletics Championships.
Women's Race
The fastest woman entering the race was Ruth Chepngetich from Kenya. She had already won the Chicago Marathon twice, in 2021 and 2022 Chicago Marathon. Her best time was 2 hours, 14 minutes, and 18 seconds.
Another top runner was Sutume Kebede, who is the eighth fastest woman marathoner ever, with a time of 2 hours, 15 minutes, and 55 seconds. She used to train with Kelvin Kiptum, the 2023 Chicago Marathon champion. Two of the fastest American women, Betsy Saina and Keira D'Amato, also competed. Their best times were 2 hours, 19 minutes, and 17 seconds, and 2 hours, 19 minutes, and 12 seconds, respectively.
Wheelchair Races
In the men's wheelchair race, Marcel Hug from Switzerland was hoping to win his fifth Chicago Marathon title. He had just won a gold medal at the Paralympics. Aaron Pike from the United States was also a strong competitor.
For the women's wheelchair race, Catherine Debrunner from Switzerland, who holds the world record and was the defending champion, competed. Susannah Scaroni from the United States was also a top contender and had won the Chicago Marathon in 2022.
The Race Day
On race day, a special moment of silence was held at the start to honor Kelvin Kiptum, the 2023 champion. Many athletes also wore tribute stickers during the race.
It was an amazing day for running! Ruth Chepngetich from Kenya set a new women's world record with an incredible time of 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 56 seconds! Sutume Asefa Kebede from Ethiopia finished second. In the men's race, John Korir from Kenya won with a time of 2 hours, 2 minutes, and 44 seconds. Huseydin Mohamed Esa from Ethiopia came in second.
