List of world records in athletics facts for kids
World records in athletics are the very best performances ever achieved by athletes in sports like track and field, road running, and racewalking. These amazing achievements are officially approved by an organization called World Athletics.
Records are kept for almost all events you see at the Olympic Games, plus a few others. The only non-metric distance that has an official record is the mile run.

How are Records Approved?
To make sure a world record is fair and accurate, World Athletics has strict rules. These rules are important for all records, even national ones, and for athletes trying to qualify for big events like the Olympics.
Here are some of the main rules:
- The track and equipment used must be the right size and type. For road races (like marathons), the course must be measured very carefully by an expert.
- Most races must be single-sex (boys only or girls only). The only exception is the mixed-sex 4 × 400 m relay, which was added in 2017.
- In a relay race, all team members must be from the same country.
- Sometimes, other runners called "pacemakers" help set a fast speed. They are allowed as long as they don't get lapped (passed by the main runners).
- Athletes must be drug tested right after their performance for a record to be approved. If an athlete is later found to have cheated by using banned substances, their record is removed.
- For short running events (up to 200 m) and jumping events, the wind helping the athlete cannot be stronger than 2.0 meters per second. For events like decathlon or heptathlon, the average wind must be less than 2.0 m/s, and no single event can have wind over 4.0 m/s.
- For running events up to 800 m, a special photo finish system that automatically times the race is required.
- There are no rules about how high up a place is (like Mexico City). Thinner air at high altitudes can help sprinters and jumpers because there's less air resistance. Records set at high altitude might have an "A" next to them, but they are still official records. For long-distance races, high altitude can actually make it harder because there's less oxygen.
- For road races, the course doesn't have to be a circle, but it can't go downhill too much from start to finish. Also, the start and finish points can't be too far apart.
Why do Athletes Get Bonuses?
When an athlete breaks a world record, it's super exciting for fans! Because of this, sponsors and event organizers (like the Diamond League) often give extra money, called bonuses, to athletes who set new records.
Some middle-distance runners even become "pacemakers" in longer races. They run at a set speed to help others break records and get paid for it, even if they don't finish the race themselves. This is a good job for runners who are great at keeping a steady pace but might not be the fastest to win races on their own.
In the pole vault, athletes like Sergey Bubka and Armand Duplantis have sometimes broken the record by just a tiny bit (one centimetre) multiple times. This allowed them to earn many bonuses from different events. Some people think they could have jumped even higher in one go, but breaking it little by little earned them more money. In most other sports, it's too hard to break a record by such a small amount on purpose.
Official World Records
World Athletics (which used to be called IAAF) started recognizing world records in 1912. They added indoor world records after 1987. In 2000, they changed a rule so that "world records" could also be set indoors, not just outdoors. This change mostly affected pole vault and some other events.
Sometimes, when a new event is added for world records, World Athletics waits a bit before declaring the first official record. This gives more athletes a chance to compete and set a strong first record.
What the Table Symbols Mean
Awaiting ratification (This means the record is still being checked and approved) not ratified or later rescinded by World Athletics (This means the record was not approved or was later removed)
- h = hand timing
- + = en route to a longer distance (This means the record was set during a longer race, like a 10K record set during a half marathon)
- A = affected by altitude (This means the record was set in a high place where the air is thinner)
- OT = oversized track (This means the track was bigger than usual)
- X = annulled due to doping violations (This means the record was removed because the athlete cheated by using banned substances)
- # = not officially ratified by World Athletics (This means the record was not officially approved by World Athletics)
- a = aided road course (This means the road course had a downhill slope that helped the runner)
- est = estimate
- i = set indoors (only for overall world record tables)
- sh = short track (used for indoor events on a 200m track)
- Wo = women-only race (for road events)
- Mx = mixed-sex race (for road events)

In 2023, World Athletics decided to change the name "indoor" to "short track" for events held on a 200m track. So, "indoor world records" are now called "world records short track." For some field events like long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, and shot put, the indoor records were removed. These changes started on November 1, 2023.

Other Amazing Performances
Some athletic achievements are called "world bests" instead of "world records." This is because they don't quite meet all the strict rules for official world records.
For example, in the past, races were often measured in yards, not meters. While the mile is still popular, most other yard distances are not official world records anymore. In 2019, World Athletics also removed some long-distance track and road events from the official record books.
Also, some records are set in unusual ways. For example, Usain Bolt set a 150-meter record on a straight track, which is different from a normal track with bends.
The "40-yard dash" is a test for American football players. But it's hard to compare these times to official track records because:
- Timing often starts after the player begins moving, not when a starting gun fires.
- The way times are measured can be different and not always precise.
- These dashes are usually run on grass or artificial turf, not a special track.
Because of these differences, a "football 40" time can't be an official world record. The fastest "football 40" is said to be 4.12 seconds by Christian Coleman. For an Olympic-level athlete, the fastest time for a 40-yard dash (including reaction time) is about 4.24 seconds by Maurice Greene.
