Warren Weir, born on October 31, 1989, is a retired Jamaican sprinter. He was best known for competing in the 200 metres race. At the 2012 London Olympics, he won a bronze medal in the 200m. This helped Jamaica win all three medals in that event.

In 2013, at the World Championships in Moscow, Warren Weir won a silver medal. He ran his personal best time of 19.79 seconds. He trained with the Racers Track Club. This club was coached by Glen Mills and included famous sprinters like Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake.

Warren Weir's Early Career

Warren Weir started his career competing in short sprints. He also ran in the 110 metres hurdles race. He was born in Trelawny Parish, Jamaica. He ran the 100 m and 200 m for Calabar High School. He competed in the Jamaican High School Championships.

In 2007, he set a hurdles best time of 13.65 seconds. He also ran the 100m in 10.69 seconds. He was a finalist in hurdles at the 2007 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships. He won a silver medal at the 2008 CARIFTA Games. There, he also helped his team win a gold medal in the 4×100 metres relay. Weir reached the semi-finals at the 2008 World Junior Championships in Athletics.

Becoming a 200m Specialist

Weir started to focus on the 200m race in 2011. This was after he joined the Racers Track Club. His coach, Glen Mills, noticed that hurdles caused him knee pain. They both decided that Weir should focus only on sprinting.

He ran under 21 seconds for the first time that year. He also placed sixth at the Jamaican Championships. He competed in European races for the first time. At his first Diamond League meeting, he finished second. He set a personal best of 20.43 seconds. In 2012, he improved his 200m best to 20.21 seconds, then to 20.13 seconds. He placed third at the Adidas Grand Prix in New York.

Olympic and World Championship Success

At the Jamaican Olympic Trials in 2012, Weir ran the 200m in 19.99 seconds. This was his first time running under 20 seconds. He finished third in the final, behind Yohan Blake and Usain Bolt. This earned him a spot on the Jamaican team for the 2012 Summer Olympics.

In the Olympic 200m final, he won a surprise bronze medal. He set a new personal best of 19.84 seconds. All three medals in that race went to Jamaican athletes. Bolt and Blake also won medals, making it a historic moment for Jamaica.

Highlights of 2013 and Beyond

Warren Weir started his 2013 season with a win. He ran the 200m in 20.11 seconds at the Adidas Grand Prix in New York City. In June, he ran the 100m in 10.02 seconds. This was a huge personal best for him.

Later, at the 2013 Jamaican National Championships, Weir ran the 200m final in 19.79 seconds. This tied Bolt's best time for that year. He won his first two Diamond League 200m races. He then finished second to Bolt at the Meeting Areva. Bolt set a new meeting record there.

At the 2013 World Championships in Athletics, Weir easily made it to the final. In the final, Bolt won the race. Weir won the silver medal with a time of 19.79 seconds. This equaled his personal best. Weir later won a gold medal in the 4 × 100m relay. He finished his season by winning the 200m at the Memorial Van Damme. This also meant he won the overall Diamond League title for the 200m.

In 2014, Weir competed in the Commonwealth Games. He won a silver medal in the 200m final.

Warren Weir announced his retirement from competing in August 2017. This was after he did not advance from the heats at the 2017 World Championships in Athletics in London. After retiring from track and field, Weir tried a new sport. He became a member of the Jamaica rugby sevens team. His team came third at the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games.
