Kahmari Montgomery (born August 16, 1997) is an American track and field athlete. He is a sprinter who runs for Nike. He is best known for racing in the 400 m event.

Kahmari won the 400 m race at the USA Championships in 2018. He also won at the NCAA Division I Championships in 2019. He has won gold medals for the United States in the 4 × 400 m relay. These wins were at the World U20 Championships in 2016 and the first Athletics World Cup in 2018.

In 2018, he ran a very fast 43.38-second part of a 4 × 400 m relay race. This helped the Houston Cougars team win their first race at the Penn Relays. In 2019, he ran an indoor relay split of 44.45 seconds. This was one of the fastest indoor splits ever. It helped the Houston Cougars set a world record for the indoor 4 × 400 m relay. Their time was 3:01.51.

High School Track Star

Kahmari Montgomery went to Plainfield Central High School. He was a top high school runner in 2015. He had the fifth-fastest 400 m time in the United States for high school seniors. He was also ranked high in the 60 m, 100 m, and 200 m races.

Montgomery won five state championships in Illinois. He won the 100 m in 2015. He won the 200 m in both 2014 and 2015. He also won the 400 m in 2014 and 2015.

College Running Journey

Starting at Missouri

In 2016, Kahmari started college at the Missouri Tigers. As a freshman, he won two championships in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). He won the indoor 400 m and the outdoor 400 m. He reached the semi-finals at the NCAA Division I Championships. He also won a silver medal at the USA Junior Championships.

Later that year, he ran at the USA Olympic Trials. He did not make it past the first races. He ended his season by winning a gold medal for the United States. This was in the 4 × 400 m relay at the World U20 Championships.

Moving to Houston

In his second year, 2017, Kahmari had a tougher season. He did not do as well in the SEC or NCAA championships. However, he raced for the United States at the Universiade. There, he met Leroy Burrell, who was the coach for the Houston Cougars. Kahmari won a silver medal in the 4 × 400 m relay at this event.

After the season, he decided to transfer to the University of Houston. He felt good about the team he met at the Universiade. He also felt he could do better as an athlete there.

Success with the Cougars

In 2018, his first year with the Houston Cougars, Kahmari won three championships. He won the indoor 400 m, the indoor 4 × 400 m, and the outdoor 400 m. These wins were in the American Athletic Conference (AAC).

At the Penn Relays, he ran an amazing 43.38-second part of the 4 × 400 m relay. This helped the Houston Cougars win their first Penn Relays 4 × 400 m relay title. They also set a new school record. He finished 4th and 7th at the NCAA Division I Championships.

In his last individual race of 2018, he won the 400 m at the USA Championships. He set a new personal best time of 44.58 seconds. He then won gold medals for the United States in the 4 × 400 m relay. These wins were at the first Athletics World Cup and the NACAC Championships.

In early 2019, Kahmari helped Houston win the 4 × 400 m relay. They set a world-leading time of 3:01.51. This was the fourth-fastest indoor performance ever. It was later recognized as an indoor world record by World Athletics. Montgomery himself ran a 44.45-second split. This was the third-fastest indoor 400 m split of all time.

Two weeks later, he won the 400 m again at the AAC Indoor Championships. He finished his indoor season with a second-place finish in the 400 m at the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships. He also won the 4 × 400 m relay title there.
