Nickel Ashmeade (born April 7, 1990) is a retired Jamaican sprinter. He was known for running in the 100-meter and 200-meter races.

Nickel Ashmeade was part of Jamaica's 4 × 100-meter relay team. They won a gold medal at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow. In the same championships, he finished 5th in the 100-meter race and 4th in the 200-meter race.

Nickel Ashmeade's Early Career

Nickel Ashmeade started his journey in sprinting as a young athlete. He went to St. Jago High School, which is famous for its track and field stars. One of his teammates there was Yohan Blake, another well-known sprinter.

Junior Successes

In 2006, Nickel Ashmeade competed at the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Junior Championships. He won the 100-meter title, beating his fellow Jamaican, Dexter Lee. He also came in second in the 200-meter race. With his teammates, he helped Jamaica win the 4 × 100-meter relay.

The next year, at the 2007 World Youth Championships in Athletics, he won more medals. He took second place in the 100-meter race. He also earned a bronze medal in the 200-meter race, setting a personal best time of 20.76 seconds. His team also won a bronze in the sprint medley relay.

World Junior Championships and CARIFTA Games

In 2008, Ashmeade focused on the 200-meter race at the 2008 World Junior Championships in Athletics. He won a silver medal, finishing just behind France's Christophe Lemaitre. He also earned another silver medal in the 4 × 100-meter relay.

He continued to win medals at the regional CARIFTA Games. In 2008, he won the 200-meter title and two gold medals in relays. In 2009, he won the 200-meter gold again and another relay gold. His last junior competition was the 2009 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships. There, he won gold in the 200-meter race with a personal best of 20.40 seconds.

Moving to Senior Competitions

Nickel Ashmeade started competing against older athletes in 2009. He won the 200-meter race at the 2009 Central American and Caribbean Championships in Athletics.

Breaking Records and Big Wins

In May 2011, he ran the 200-meter race in under 20 seconds for the first time. His time was 19.96 seconds, which was a big improvement for him. Later that month, he also improved his 100-meter time at the Ponce Grand Prix. He set a new meet record, beating Justin Gatlin, an Olympic and World champion.

At the 2013 World Championships in Athletics, Ashmeade competed in three events. He finished 5th in the 100-meter race and 4th in the 200-meter race. He then helped the Jamaican 4 × 100-meter relay team win a gold medal.

Olympic Debut and Relay Success

Nickel Ashmeade represented Jamaica at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This was his first time at the Olympic Games. He reached the semifinals in both the 100-meter and 200-meter races. He earned his first Olympic medal as part of the 4 × 100-meter relay team. He ran the third leg, and the team, anchored by Usain Bolt, won gold with a time of 37.27 seconds.

Ashmeade has also won five medals for Jamaica at the IAAF World Relays. In 2014, he won two gold medals in the 4 × 100-meter and 4 × 200-meter relays. In 2015, he won another gold and a silver medal. His most recent medal was a bronze in the 4 × 200-meter relay at the 2017 IAAF World Relays.
