Nickel Ashmeade (born April 7, 1990) is a retired Jamaican sprinter. He was known for running very fast in short races. These races include the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints.
Nickel Ashmeade was a key part of Jamaica's relay teams. At the 2013 World Championships in Moscow, he helped his team win a gold medal. This was in the 4x100 meter relay race. In the individual races at the same event, he finished 5th in the 100m and 4th in the 200m.

Nickel Ashmeade's Running Career
Nickel Ashmeade started his running journey at St. Jago High School. He was a teammate of famous sprinter Yohan Blake. Nickel showed his talent early on as a young athlete.
Early Success as a Junior Athlete
In 2006, at the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Junior Championships, Nickel won the 100m race. He also came second in the 200m. He helped Jamaica win the 4×100 meter relay title.
He continued to win medals at the 2007 World Youth Championships in Athletics. He earned a silver medal in the 100m. He also got a bronze medal in the 200m with his best time of 20.76 seconds. He helped his national team win another bronze in the sprint medley relay.
Junior World Championships and CARIFTA Games
In 2008, Nickel focused on the 200m race at the 2008 World Junior Championships in Athletics. He won a silver medal, finishing just behind France's Christophe Lemaitre. He also won a second silver medal in the 4x100m relay.
The CARIFTA Games were another place where he shined. In 2008, he won the 200m title and two relay gold medals. He nearly did the same in 2009, winning the 200m and a 4x100m relay gold. His last big junior race was at the 2009 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships. There, he won the 200m gold with a new personal best time of 20.40 seconds. He also took home a relay bronze medal.
Moving to Senior Races
Nickel started competing in senior races at the 2009 Central American and Caribbean Championships in Athletics. He won the 200m race there.
In 2011, he made big improvements. He ran his first 200m race in under 20 seconds, finishing in 19.96 seconds. This was a huge step forward for him. Later that month, he also improved his 100m time at the Ponce Grand Prix. He set a new record for that event, beating Justin Gatlin, an Olympic and World champion.
World Championships and Olympic Games
Nickel competed in the 2013 World Championships in Athletics. He ran in the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay races. He finished 5th in the 100m and 4th in the 200m. Most importantly, he was part of the Jamaican 4x100m relay team that won a gold medal!
In 2016, Nickel represented Jamaica at his first Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He finished fifth in the 100m semifinals and fourth in the 200m semifinals. He won his first Olympic medal as part of the 4x100m relay team. This team, which included the legendary Usain Bolt, won gold with a time of 37.27 seconds.
Success in World Relays
Nickel Ashmeade has won five medals for Jamaica at the IAAF World Relays. In 2014, he won two gold medals in the 4x100m and 4x200m relays. In 2015, he won another gold in the 4x200m relay and a silver in the 4x100m relay. His most recent medal was a bronze in the 4x200m relay at the 2017 event.
