History of Ramona
The town of Ramona started with a different name, Bon-Ton. In 1899, its name was changed to Ramona. This new name honored a famous novel called Ramona by Helen Hunt Jackson.
Ramona used to be an important "oil town." This means that the town's economy was mostly based on finding and selling oil. It was also a stop for the Santa Fe railroad, which helped transport goods and people.
When the oil supply started to run out, Ramona faced challenges. There wasn't much other industry to support the town, so it began to shrink. Today, only a few businesses remain, like a garage, a bank, a medical clinic, and a small grocery store.
For about 30 years, the Washington County Sheriff's Office was in charge of keeping the town safe. This happened after the local police department stopped operating. Later, under the leadership of former mayor Robert Fiddler, the police department was started again. The town also fixed its water pipes and received money from the Cherokee Nation to repave the streets. Ramona also provides natural gas to a large Wal-Mart distribution center nearby.
More recently, when Cyle Miller was mayor, the Cherokee Nation opened the Cherokee Casino Ramona. This casino is located near U.S. Route 75. The casino has been a big help to the local economy, bringing in more money and jobs. Because of this, Ramona has also grown in size by adding more land to the town.
