Christian Coleman (born March 6, 1996) is an American professional track and field runner. He is known for being super fast in short races, called sprints. He competes in the 60, 100, and 200-meter events.
Christian is a world record holder for the indoor 60 meters, running it in an amazing 6.34 seconds. He also holds a personal best of 9.76 seconds for the 100 meters. This makes him one of the fastest runners ever in that event!
He won the 100-meter race at the World Championships in 2019. He also helped his team win gold in the 4 × 100-meter relay race. Christian has won many other big titles, including the Diamond League in 2018 and 2023.
Christian ran for the Tennessee Volunteers in college. There, he won five national titles. He even set collegiate records in the 60 and 100-meter races. Like all athletes, Christian has rules to follow to make sure sports are fair. At one point, he had to take a break from competing for a while because of rules about testing. But he worked hard and came back to race again!

Christian Coleman's Early Life and Career
Christian Coleman was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He grew up with two sisters, Camryn and Cailyn. His family loved sports. Some of his cousins played college football. His older sister, Camryn, also competed in track and field.
Christian started running track when he was very young. He won the long jump in his age group at the Amateur Athletic Union Championships in 2007.
High School Running Success
Christian went to Our Lady of Mercy Catholic High School. He was a star on his high school track team. In his final year, 2014, he was a finalist in both the 100 and 200-meter races at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor.
At the Georgia High School State Championships, he won many events. He won the 100 meters, 200 meters, long jump, and the 4 × 100-meter relay. He also set new state high school records in the 100 meters (10.38 seconds) and 200 meters (21.10 seconds). Christian was also a great high school football player. He played as a defensive back and wide receiver. After high school, he received a special scholarship to attend the University of Tennessee.
College Achievements
At the University of Tennessee, Christian continued to shine. In 2016, he won the 200 meters at the National Track and Field Indoor Championships. He also placed third in the 60 meters. He was runner-up in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes at the outdoor championships.
His junior year was even better. He set personal bests in the 60 and 200-meter dashes. These were the fastest times in the world that year! Christian won gold in both events at the 2017 Indoor National Track and Field Championships. He tied the college record in the 60 meters with 6.45 seconds. He was just 0.01 seconds off the college record in the 200 meters.
Christian finished his college career by winning the 100 and 200-meter dashes at the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He is one of only two people from Tennessee to win all these indoor and outdoor sprint titles.
Christian even got attention from the NFL world. After a football player ran a fast 40-yard dash, Christian showed he was even faster. He ran 40 yards in 4.12 seconds on turf! In 2017, Christian won The Bowerman award. This award goes to the best college track and field athlete of the year.

Christian Coleman became a professional runner in 2017. He signed a contract with Nike.
Olympic Games and World Championships
Christian qualified for the 2016 Olympic Trials. He ran the 100 meters in under 10 seconds for the first time. He was chosen for the US 4 × 100-meter relay team at the Olympics. His team won their qualifying race, but was later disqualified in the final.
In 2017, Christian had a big breakthrough on the world stage. At the World Championships in London, he won a silver medal in the 100 meters. He finished behind Justin Gatlin and ahead of the legendary Usain Bolt in Bolt's last 100-meter race. Christian also helped the US 4 × 100-meter relay team win a silver medal.
Setting a World Record in 2018
Christian started 2018 by setting a new world record in the 60 meters indoors. He ran 6.37 seconds, breaking a record that had stood for almost 20 years! A month later, he broke his own record, running 6.34 seconds at the US Indoor Championships.
He then won the 60 meters world indoor title at the World Indoor Championships. This was his first gold medal at a major championship. Later that year, he won the 100 meters at the Diamond League finals in Brussels. He ran 9.79 seconds, which was his personal best and the fastest time in three years.
World Champion in 2019
Christian skipped the indoor season in 2019 to get ready for the outdoor season. He started strong, running 9.86 seconds in the 100 meters in Shanghai. He then won the 100 meters in Oslo, Norway, with a world-leading time of 9.85 seconds.
On September 28, 2019, Christian Coleman became the world champion in the 100 meters. He won the final at the World Championships in Doha, Qatar. He set a new personal best of 9.76 seconds. This made him the sixth fastest man in history!
Return to Racing in 2022 and 2023
After a break from competing, Christian came back in 2022. He ran season bests of 6.41 in the 60m and 9.87 in the 100m. At the World Championships in Eugene, he finished sixth in the 100m. He also won a silver medal with the 4x100m relay team.
In 2023, Christian showed he was getting back to his top form. He won the 60m at the Millrose Games with a time of 6.47 seconds. At the World Championships in Budapest, he ran a season's best of 9.88 in the 100m semi-final. He then helped the US 4x100m relay team win a gold medal! He also won the 100m at the 2023 Diamond League finals, tying his season's best of 9.83 seconds. This was his fastest time since becoming world champion in 2019.
