The 2023 World Athletics Championships was a huge international sports event. It was the 19th time this championship took place. Athletes from all over the world gathered in Budapest, Hungary, from August 19 to 27, 2023. They competed in many different track and field events.

This event returned to its usual schedule of happening every two years. The previous championship in Eugene, USA, was held in 2022. It was moved because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This was the first time Hungary hosted the World Athletics Championships. The official mascot for the event was a Racka sheep named Youhuu.

About the Championships

Where the Games Were Held

The championships took place at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest. This stadium was built especially for this big event. It could hold about 36,000 people.

How Athletes Qualified

Athletes could qualify for the championships in a few ways. They could earn a spot based on their World Athletics Rankings. Some athletes also got a "wild card" entry. This meant they qualified by being a reigning world champion or a winner of the 2022 Diamond League.

Athletes could also qualify by doing well in other important competitions. For example, winners of the 2022 World Athletics Continental Tour for Hammer Throw could qualify. The same applied to the World Race Walking Tour and World Combined Events Tour.

If a country did not have any athletes who qualified, they could still send one male or one female athlete. This rule did not apply to all events, like road races or combined events.

Event Schedule Highlights

The championships ran for nine exciting days, from August 19 to 27, 2023. Each day was packed with different track and field events. Athletes competed in preliminary rounds, semi-finals, and finals. Some of the most popular events included sprints like the 100m and 200m. There were also longer races, hurdles, and relay races. Field events like long jump, high jump, shot put, and javelin throw also took place.
