Karsten Warholm (born February 28, 1996) is a famous Norwegian sprinter. He is best known for competing in the 400 metres and 400-meter hurdles races. Karsten is an Olympic champion, a three-time world champion, and holds the world record in the 400-meter hurdles.
He won gold medals in the 400-meter hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in 2017, 2019, and 2023. He also won gold at the European Athletics Championships in 2018, 2022, and 2024. Karsten is the first athlete ever to win three 400-meter hurdles titles at the World Championships. He has also won the Diamond League 400-meter hurdles title twice. In 2021, he was named the World Athletics Male Athlete of the Year.
In July 2021, Karsten broke a 29-year-old world record in the 400-meter hurdles. The next month, at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, he won the gold medal. He set a new world record of 45.94 seconds, beating his own record by a lot! At the 2024 Paris Olympics, he won a silver medal in the same event.

Karsten's Athletics Journey
Starting Out in Sports
In March 2013, Karsten Warholm showed his talent by winning eight gold medals. This happened at the Norwegian Youth Indoors Championships. Later that year, in July, he won a gold medal at the 2013 World Youth Championships in Athletics. He competed in the boys' octathlon, which is a competition with eight different events.
In 2014, Karsten tried out the decathlon, a competition with ten events. He was also good at events like the long jump, hurdling, and 400 metres. He set a new Norwegian junior record for the 400 meters with a time of 46.31 seconds.
In July 2015, he won two silver medals at the 2015 European Athletics Junior Championships. He got silver in the 400 meters and also in the decathlon.
Breaking National Records
In July 2016, Karsten broke the Norwegian national record in the 400-meter hurdles. He ran it in 48.84 seconds at the 2016 European Athletics Championships. He then finished sixth in the final. In August, he reached the semi-finals of the 400-meter hurdles at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Becoming a World Champion
In July 2017, Karsten won gold in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2017 European Athletics U23 Championships. He set a new championship record of 48.37 seconds. He also won a silver medal in the 400 meters.
In August 2017, he won his first gold medal at the 2017 IAAF World Championships in the 400-meter hurdles. His time was 48.35 seconds. Just two weeks later, he improved his Norwegian record to 48.22 seconds.
At the 2018 European Athletics Championships, Karsten won another gold medal in the 400-meter hurdles. He set a new personal best and a European U23 record with a time of 47.64 seconds.
In March 2019, Karsten won gold in the 400 meters at the 2019 European Athletics Indoor Championships. His time of 45.05 seconds matched the European record. In June, he broke the European men's 400-meter hurdles record at the Bislett Games in Oslo, running 47.33 seconds. He kept improving, running 47.12 seconds in July and then 46.92 seconds in August. This made him only the third person ever to run under 47 seconds for the distance. At the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar, he won the 400-meter hurdles again, keeping his title from 2017.
On June 11, 2020, Karsten set a world best time of 33.78 seconds in the 300 metres hurdles at the Impossible Games in Oslo. In August, he ran a personal best of 46.87 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles. This made him the first person to run under 47 seconds twice.
World Records and Olympic Gold
On July 1, 2021, Karsten Warholm broke the world record in the 400-meter hurdles. He ran 46.70 seconds at the Bislett Stadium in Oslo. This record had stood since 1992!
He then broke his own record by a huge amount at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He won the gold medal in the 400-meter hurdles with an amazing time of 45.94 seconds. This was the first time anyone had run the 400-meter hurdles in under 46 seconds! The silver medalist, Rai Benjamin, and the bronze medalist, Alison dos Santos, also ran incredibly fast, beating the old Olympic record.
"Karsten vs. Mondo"
On September 4, 2024, Karsten Warholm had a fun exhibition race. He competed in a 100-meter sprint against Mondo Duplantis, who is a world record holder in pole vault. Mondo won the race with a time of 10.37 seconds. Karsten finished just a bit behind him at 10.47 seconds, which was also his personal best time for the 100 meters.
