Mohamed "Mo" Katir El Haouzi was born on February 17, 1998. He is a talented runner who competes in middle-distance and long-distance races. Mohamed was born in Morocco but grew up in Spain.

He has won several important medals. He earned a bronze medal in the 1500 metres at the 2022 World Athletics Championships. The next year, he won a silver medal in the 5000 metres at the 2023 World Athletics Championships. Katir also took a silver medal in the 5000 metres at the 2022 European Athletics Championships.

Mohamed Katir holds three Spanish records for different race distances. These are the 1500 m, 3000 m, and 5000 m races. He has also been a national champion twice. He holds the European indoor record for the 3000 metres. Currently, Mohamed Katir is not competing in races.

About Mohamed Katir

Mohamed Katir was born in Ksar el-Kebir, Morocco. When he was 5 years old, he moved to Mula, in the Murcia area of Spain. He grew up there.

Mohamed had competed for Spain in youth sports before. He even won a Spanish national cross-country championship. He officially became a Spanish citizen in October 2019. This process took about four years.

Breaking Records and Winning Races

In May 2021, Katir won his first big international race. This was at a Diamond League event in Gateshead, United Kingdom. He won the 5000 metres race there.

Over just 33 days in June and July 2021, he broke three long-standing Spanish national records. These records were set at other Diamond League meetings.

  • On June 10, he set a new 5000 m record of 12:50.79. This happened at the Golden Gala in Florence, Italy.
  • Less than a month later, he set a Spanish record in the 1500 metres. This was at the Herculis meet in Monaco. He finished second in that race. His time of 3:28.76 made him the 10th fastest runner of all time in that distance.
  • Four days after that, he won the 3000 metres race in Gateshead, United Kingdom. His time was 7:27.64. This broke a record for that specific race. His time was the 15th fastest ever for that distance.

At the end of 2021, Katir won the San Silvestre Vallecana 10 kilometres road race in Madrid. He set another national best time in this race. He was the first Spanish runner to win this race since 2003.

On February 15, 2023, Katir set a new European indoor record for the 3000 m. This was at a meeting in Liévin. His time was 7:24.68. This was more than six seconds faster than the old record. His time was even faster than the previous world indoor record for the 3000 m.
