About Mohamed Katir

Mohamed Katir was born in Ksar el-Kebir, Morocco. When he was 5 years old, he moved to Mula, in the Murcia region of Spain, where he grew up. He had already competed as a Spanish athlete in youth events. In October 2019, after a four-year process, he officially became a Spanish citizen.

Breaking Records and Winning Races

In May 2021, Katir achieved his first big win in the 2021 Diamond League. This is a series of top athletics meetings. He won the 5000 metres race at the Grand Prix Gateshead in the United Kingdom.

Over just 33 days in June and July of that year, he broke three long-standing Spanish national records at Diamond League events:

  • On June 10, he set a new 5000 metres record with a time of 12:50.79 at the Golden Gala in Florence, Italy.
  • Less than a month later, at the Herculis meet in Monaco, he set a Spanish record in the 1500 metres. He finished second in that race. His time of 3:28.76 made him one of the fastest 10 runners ever in that distance.
  • Four days after that, he won the 3000 metres race in Gateshead, United Kingdom. He finished with a time of 7:27.64, breaking a record set by the famous runner Haile Gebrselassie. This time placed him among the top 15 runners of all time for that distance.

At the end of 2021, Katir won the San Silvestre Vallecana 10-kilometre road race in Madrid. He set another national best time and was the first Spanish winner of this race since 2003.

On February 15, 2023, Katir set a new European indoor record for the 3000 metres. This happened at a competition in Liévin, France. His time was 7:24.68, which was much faster than the old record. This time was even faster than the previous world indoor record set in 1998.
