Gianmarco Tamberi (born June 1, 1992) is a famous Italian high jumper. He has won many big titles, including an Olympic gold medal in 2020, a World Championship in 2023, and a European Championship in 2024.

Gianmarco also won the Diamond League three times (in 2021, 2022, and 2024). He was the first Italian to ever win this important athletics series.

Gianmarco's Amazing Career

For many years, Gianmarco was coached by his father, Marco Tamberi. His dad was also a great high jumper and held an Italian record back in 1983.

Breaking Records and Winning Medals

In 2015, Gianmarco broke the Italian high jump record twice. First, he jumped 2.34 meters in Cologne. Then, he jumped an even higher 2.37 meters in Eberstadt. He finished 8th at the World Championships that year.

In early 2016, Gianmarco was on fire! He won every competition he entered. He set a new Italian indoor record by jumping 2.35 meters in Banská Bystrica. He then jumped 2.38 meters in Hustopeče, setting another Italian indoor record. This amazing streak led him to win a gold medal at the World Indoor Championships in Portland in March 2016. He jumped 2.36 meters there.

Sadly, Gianmarco could not compete at the 2016 Olympics. He got an injury earlier in the season.

The Famous Shared Gold Medal

On August 1, 2021, something very special happened at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Gianmarco and Qatari athlete Mutaz Essa Barshim both jumped 2.37 meters in the men's high jump. Instead of having a jump-off to decide a single winner, they decided to share the gold medal! This was a rare and heartwarming moment in Olympic history.

After they both missed their final jumps, Barshim asked the referee, "Can we have two golds?" When he heard the answer was yes, he hugged Gianmarco and said, "History, my friend."

World Champion and Olympic Flag Bearer

Gianmarco won another gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest. He beat America's JuVaughn Harrison after both cleared 2.36 meters.

On June 13, 2024, Gianmarco and Olympic fencer Arianna Errigo received the Italian flag from the president of Italy. They carried the flag for Italy at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. During the opening ceremony of the 2024 games, he accidentally lost his wedding ring in the River Seine, which many people talked about.

Fun Fact: The Half-Beard

At big competitions, Gianmarco is known for a fun tradition. He grows a full beard for the qualification rounds. Then, for the final competition, he shaves off half of it!
