Building History and Changes
The 5900 Wilshire building was originally built for a company called Mutual Benefit Life. In December 2005, The Ratkovich Company bought the building. They spent a lot of money to update it. This renovation started in 2005 and included a new lobby.
Famous Companies at 5900 Wilshire
In December 2008, the building became the main office for Variety on the west coast. Variety is a well-known newspaper about entertainment. Its name was displayed in red letters at the top of the building until late 2013.
Later, in 2014, another company moved in. The building became the official west coast headquarters for SBE Entertainment Group. You can now see their company logo at the top of the building.
Berlin Wall Memorial
One of the most interesting things about 5900 Wilshire is outside. In the front lawn of the building, there is a special memorial. It has ten real pieces of the Berlin Wall. These pieces together form the longest stretch of the Berlin Wall found anywhere in the United States.
How the Wall Pieces Arrived
The Berlin Wall segments were put in place in 2009. This was done by the Wende Museum. To celebrate the removal of the original Berlin Wall, they even temporarily built a wall across Wilshire Boulevard during the installation.
