5 News at 5, also known as Channel 5 News, is a news show on the British TV channel Channel 5. It's made by a company called ITN from their main newsroom in London.

History of 5 News

5 News started on March 30, 1997, when Channel 5 first launched. It was one of the main shows for the new channel. Back then, ITN also made the news for Channel 4 and ITV.

In 2004, Sky News won a contract to make the news for Channel 5 instead of ITN. The first news show made by Sky was planned for January 3, 2005. However, a big event, the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, made them start two days earlier with a short update. Sky News continued to provide the news until 2012.

Five News (as it was called then) was known for trying new things with how news was presented. It won many awards in its early years for being fresh and different.

On February 14, 2011, the news service changed its name back to 5 News from Five News. Then, on February 20, 2012, ITN started making the news for Channel 5 again, just like when it first began.

In 2008, Five News got a new look with different music and titles. The 7pm news show was renamed Five News at 7. Presenters started standing up to read the news again, which was a unique style. In 2009, Five News at 7 was stopped. It was replaced by a show called Live from Studio Five, which was a mix of news and chat.

In 2010, Five News at 7 came back after Channel 5 got new owners. Later, in 2011, Emma Crosby became the main presenter for the 7pm news, and Matt Barbet hosted the 5pm show. The news was relaunched as 5 News to match the channel's new look.

In 2012, the 7pm news moved to 6:30pm because ITN took over production from Sky News. The new ITN-made 5 News shows started on February 20, 2012, with Matt Barbet and Emma Crosby still presenting.

Later in 2012, Matt Barbet left 5 News. Emma Crosby then presented both the 5pm and 6:30pm shows. In 2014, Matt Barbet returned to 5 News to host a new show called 5 News Tonight at 6:30pm. Emma Crosby continued to present 5 News at 5pm.

In 2015, Emma Crosby left 5 News. Sian Williams from BBC News took her place in early 2016.

On October 31, 2016, 5 News got another new look. The team moved back to the ITN building, and the new studio had a desk shaped like the number 5.

Channel 5 used to have its own weather presenters. Then, Sky News presenters gave the forecasts. In 2010, Sian Welby joined Channel 5 as a weather presenter. Since October 2016, Channel 5 Weather works with the Met Office, and Clare Nasir is the main weather presenter.

In September 2021, a TV regulator called Ofcom allowed Channel 5 to change its evening schedule. This meant the 6:30pm news slot was removed. Instead, a new, longer 5 News show started airing at 5pm.

The 2021 Relaunch of 5 News

The new hour-long 5 News show started on November 8, 2021, at 5pm. ITN still produces it. It was first presented by Sian Williams and Claudia-Liza Vanderpuije. The show also has reporters across the UK and a special WhatsApp link for viewers to send messages to the presenters. Channel 5 hopes this new news show will be as lively as their morning show, Jeremy Vine.

In March 2022, Sian Williams announced she would be stepping down as a main presenter after six years. She still works on special shows for Channel 5 and helps with a feature called Mind Matters with Dr Sian on 5 News. On April 4, 2022, it was announced that Dan Walker would join the show to replace Sian Williams.

Cool Features of 5 News

5 News has introduced several new and interesting ways to present the news:

  • It used to give quick news updates every hour during the week.
  • A 'ticker' (a scrolling line of text) was shown during these updates. This was the first time a regular TV channel in the UK used one for news. It later changed to a weather ticker before being removed.
  • Presenters would stand up or perch instead of sitting behind a desk. Other news shows have since copied this style.
  • Sometimes, the people who make the show would give hints about what was coming up next.
  • The show often had live discussions with experts, campaigners, famous people, and political commentators.
  • 5 News sometimes had 'guest editors' like Ms. Dynamite or Alastair Campbell.
  • Your News was a part of the show where viewers' videos were featured. Many other news shows now do something similar, calling it 'user-generated content'.
  • For a short time, email addresses for reporters were shown on screen while they were talking.
  • When Sky News started making the show, Five News was the first programme to be broadcast in widescreen from Sky's main building.
