The End of the Umayyad Empire

The last ruler, or Caliph, of the Umayyad Empire was named Marwan II. After his army lost the battle, Marwan II was removed from power and died. This marked the end of the Umayyad Empire, which had ruled for many years.
The Start of the Abbasid Empire
After the Umayyad Empire ended, a new empire began. Al-Saffah was declared the first Caliph of the Abbasid Empire. This was a huge change in the Islamic world.
Later, the capital city of the Abbasid Empire moved from Damascus to Baghdad. Baghdad was in the area that used to be part of the Persian Empire. This move was very important for Baghdad. The city grew into a major center for international trade and culture. It became a place where people from different lands came to buy, sell, and share ideas.
