The Death of Charlemagne
On January 28, 814, Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great, passed away. He was the King of the Franks and the first Holy Roman Emperor. Charlemagne had ruled for many years and had built a very large empire that covered much of Western Europe. He was known for bringing together different lands and for promoting education and culture.
A New Emperor: Louis the Pious
After Charlemagne's death, his only surviving son, Louis I, became the new emperor. Louis the Pious continued to rule the vast Frankish Empire. He faced many challenges in keeping the empire united, but he tried to follow in his father's footsteps.
