Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The 88th Regiment of Foot (Highland Volunteers), also known as Campbell's Highlanders, was a Scottish army group. It was a type of infantry regiment, which means its soldiers fought on foot. This regiment was part of the British Army. It was created in 1760 and stopped being an active group in 1763.

History of the 88th Regiment

The 88th Regiment was formed in January 1760. It was started by Colonel John Campbell of Dunoon. The soldiers came from different places in Scotland, including Argyll, Perth, Inverness, Ross, and Sutherland. Some of the first soldiers came from another group called the 87th Regiment.

Later that same year, the regiment moved to Germany. There, they took part in two important battles. They fought in the Battle of Warburg in July 1760. They also fought in the Battle of Villinghausen in July 1761.

The regiment returned to Scotland in late 1762. In July 1763, the 88th Regiment was officially disbanded. This happened in a town called Linlithgow. When a regiment is disbanded, it means the group is no longer active, and its soldiers go their separate ways.
