How to Reach A' Mhaighdean
Reaching A' Mhaighdean is a real adventure! It is about 8 miles (13 kilometers) north of a village called Kinlochewe. However, most people start their journey from Poolewe. From Poolewe, you can take a private road southeast towards Kernsary. Remember, this road is only for walking or cycling.
After Kernsary, you will find a good path. This path leads to a causeway, which is a raised road across water. This causeway connects two lochs: the Fionn Loch and the Dubh Loch. From there, you follow a path heading east. You will climb to about 1,000 feet (300 meters) high. Then, you cross a stream called Allt Bruthach an Esain. This crossing helps you reach the northwest ridge of the mountain.

A' Mhaighdean is made of very old rock called gneiss. Gneiss is a type of rock that has been changed by heat and pressure deep inside the Earth. The very top of A' Mhaighdean is the highest point of a type of gneiss called Lewisian gneiss. This rock is some of the oldest in the world!
Part of the mountain's northwest ridge has a cap of Torridonian sandstone. Sandstone is a rock made from tiny grains of sand pressed together over millions of years. So, A' Mhaighdean shows us different layers of Earth's ancient history.
