The Story of Puteolana 1902
Puteoli Sport
The club began in 1902 as Puteoli Sport. It was a club for many different sports. This is the official founding date the club uses today.
A few years later, in 1909, the name changed to Puteoli Sporting Club.
For the 1913–14 season, they joined a league run by the FIGC. This league was called Terza Categoria. At that time, it was the third level of Italian football.

Playing in the Top League
After World War I, the club changed its name again. It became Unione Sportiva Puteolana.
They joined the Prima Categoria Championship for the 1919–20 season. This was like today's Serie A. They played against the best clubs in the Campania region.
Puteolana reached the semi-finals of Southern Italy. They eventually lost to Fortitudo Roma.
The next season, they played in the championship again. They beat teams like Naples and Salernitana.
Even though they qualified for the next round, the FIGC put them in last place. This was due to some rule problems, and their season ended early.
Italian football then split into two groups. Puteolana played in the CCI league. This league was called Prima Divisione and had most of the big clubs.
In their part of Campania, they played against six other teams. They won all 12 of their games! Then, they beat Anconitana.
They then faced Fortitudo in Rome. The winner would play Pro Vercelli for the league championship. Puteolana lost 2–0 to Fortitudo. This meant they finished the season among the top four teams.
A Difficult Period
Even after doing well, the club did not join the newly reunited league. This was because of money problems. Instead, they played in the much lower III Divisione.
The club worked hard and moved up two divisions. By 1925–26, they were back in the top league. However, they only lasted one season. They lost all their games in the Campania section.
The club then disappeared from the top levels for a long time. This was from 1926 until 1947. During this time, they played in amateur leagues.
Eventually, Puteolana won the I Divisione in 1947–48. They were promoted to the Promozione Interregionale. This was just one step below Serie C back then.
They moved between Serie D and Promozione Campania for much of the 1950s and 1960s. After being promoted from Promozione Campania in 1969–70, they spent the 1970s in Serie D. They usually finished in the middle of the table. Their best finish was 4th place in 1973–74.
The early 1980s were tough for the club. They were moved down three times in a row. The club then stopped playing in 1982.
However, that same season, a team from Naples called Internapoli moved to Pozzuoli. They had problems with their home stadium. They changed their name to S.C. Puteolana 1909. After four seasons in Serie D and one in Promozione, this new club also stopped playing in 1986.
Campania Puteolana
A club started in 1975 moved to Pozzuoli in 1986. It wanted to continue the football legacy in the city. The club changed its name to Società Sportiva Calcio Campania Puteolana.
Campania Puteolana was playing in Serie C1. They finished 6th in their first season after the move. In the Coppa Italia Serie C, they were runners-up. They lost to Livorno in the final.
Under manager Claudio Ranieri, the club was moved down to Serie C2 the next year. But Brazilian manager Jarbas Faustinho Canè led them straight back up as champions.
After two more seasons in Serie C1, they were moved down again. By 1992, they were moved down from Serie C2. The Campania club then moved back to Naples and was not heard from much after that.
From Comprensorio Puteolano to F.C. Puteolana 1902
To keep the city's football history alive, some people restarted the club in 1992. It was named Comprensorio Puteolano'. The club started the 1992–93 season in the Promozione Campania.
After one season, the club was promoted to Eccellenza. Then, they went straight into Serie D.
During this time, Puteolana spent several seasons in Serie D. They often finished in good positions, like 3rd and 4th place. In 1999–00, they were promoted to Serie C2. The club was now back at a professional level. They almost got another promotion, finishing 4th.
However, by 2002–03, the club was moved down to Serie D again. Two years later, they went down to Eccellenza Campania. Between 2005 and 2008, the club's official name was Football Club Puteolana 1902. They stayed in the Eccellenza league for three seasons. Then, they were moved down to Promozione.
2008-09: A.S.D. Atletico Puteolana 2008
This club was formed when Football Club Puteolana and Gragnano (a Serie D club) joined together. This meant they played in Serie D for the 2008–09 season.
2012: Puteolana 1902
In 2012, football returned to the "Domenico Conte" stadium. This was for a major championship, the Serie D. This happened because Internapoli Football Club moved to Pozzuoli. They became SSD Puteolana 1902 Internapoli.
In 2014, the club got its historic name back. It became S.S.D. Puteolana 1902.
In 2024, the club took over the sports rights of Real Casalnuovo. This helped them secure a place in the Serie D league.
