What is A Troll in Central Park About?
This movie tells the story of a kind troll named Stanley. He lives in the Kingdom of Trolls. Unlike other trolls, Stanley loves to make flowers and plants grow. This is a big problem because trolls are supposed to be grumpy and destructive!
Stanley's Banishment to Central Park
Stanley has a special "green thumb" that brings plants to life. But in his home, the Kingdom of Trolls, this is forbidden. When Queen Gnorga, the mean troll queen, finds out, she is very angry. She thinks Stanley makes all trolls look bad. Instead of turning him to stone, she banishes him to Central Park in New York City. Stanley ends up hiding in a cave under a bridge.
Gus and Rosie Meet Stanley
The next day, two kids, Gus and Rosie, are in their Manhattan apartment. They can't go to Central Park with their parents. So, Gus takes Rosie to the park himself. Rosie, who is very young, sees Stanley and thinks he's her toy troll. She follows him into his cave and they become friends.
Gus comes looking for Rosie. His toy boat gets broken by accident. Gus is surprised to find Stanley and his talking flowers! He tries to make Rosie come home, but Stanley and Gus argue. This makes Rosie cry.
Gnorga's Evil Plan
Queen Gnorga sees Rosie crying through her magic crystal. She gets furious when she spots Stanley. She also sees Gus being upset with Rosie and Stanley. Gnorga decides to use this to her advantage. She casts a spell on Gus, making him cry a huge flood of tears! This flood threatens to drown Stanley, his flowers, and Rosie.
Stanley quickly uses his green thumb to make Gus's broken toy boat much bigger. It becomes a "dream boat" that saves the kids. They escape the flood together.
The Battle for Central Park
Determined to get Stanley, Gnorga sends a tornado to bring her and King Llort (her husband) to Central Park. The tornado also destroys the park's plants. Gus and Rosie wake up and decide to go home. Gnorga and Llort chase them. Gnorga manages to grab Rosie, but Gus gets away because Llort isn't very good at his job.
Gus goes back to the cave and asks Stanley for help. But Stanley is scared of Gnorga and says his magic isn't strong enough. Gus gets angry and tells Stanley he's a coward. He says Stanley's dreams won't come true if he's too afraid to fight.
Gus decides to face Gnorga himself, with the help of the flowers and animals. He finds Rosie in a cage and frees her. The flowers tie up Gnorga's dog. Gnorga and Llort chase the kids out of the building, and a big fight begins!
Stanley's Victory and Central Park's Revival
During the fight, Gnorga uses her dark magic to turn Gus into a troll. Rosie falls into a deep hole. Just then, Stanley appears on Gus's toy boat, which is now a flying boat with leaf wings! He saves Rosie, who is not hurt. Stanley then challenges Gnorga to a thumb-wrestling match.
Stanley wins the match, making roses grow all over Gnorga's body. As Stanley, Gus, and Rosie celebrate, Gnorga uses Gus's troll thumb to turn Stanley into stone. The flying boat turns back into a toy boat, and the kids fall through a window into their apartment. Stanley, now a statue, lands on a trash can nearby. Gnorga thinks she has won, but Stanley's last bit of magic turns her into a rose bush! The tornado comes back and sucks Gnorga, Llort, and their dog back to the Kingdom of Trolls. Gus also turns back into a human.
The next morning, Gus, Rosie, and their parents visit Central Park. Gus and Rosie put the stone Stanley on a stand. Gus tries to bring him back to life with his temporarily green thumb, but it seems to fail. As they leave, they look back and Stanley is gone! Then they hear Stanley's whistle and see him standing on a tree with his flowers, alive again! Stanley brings Central Park back to life and covers the whole city in beautiful plants and flowers.
Back in the Kingdom of Trolls, Gnorga is no longer queen and is planted like a bush. Llort becomes the new, much kinder ruler. He reads newspapers that call his wife the "queen of posies" and laughs. Then Gnorga's dog attacks him as the movie ends.
