The Aachen District (known as Kreis Aachen in German) is a region in the western part of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It's important to know that the big city of Aachen is actually a separate area and not part of this district.
History of Aachen District
The Aachen District we know today was created in 1975. Before that, it was made up of several smaller areas. These included the old districts of Aachen and Monschau. Parts of the Düren, Jülich, Schleiden, and Selfkant districts were also added to form the new region.
Symbols: The Coat of Arms
Every district has a special symbol called a coat of arms. The coat of arms for the Aachen District tells a story about its past.
- Top part: You'll see a black lion. This lion was the symbol of Jülich, which was once a powerful duchy (a type of small kingdom). Many parts of the current Aachen District used to belong to this duchy.
- Bottom part: Here, you'll find a swan sitting on a deer antler. This was the symbol of Burtscheid. Burtscheid used to be the main town of the district. Later, it became part of the city of Aachen.
