Aaron Gwin's Racing Journey
Aaron Gwin started racing BMX bikes when he was only 4 years old. By age 8, he was already racing at a national level. When he was 12, Aaron switched to motocross. He raced motocross until he was 17, but stopped because of many injuries.
Starting Downhill Mountain Biking
In 2008, when Aaron was 20, a friend named Cody Warren lent him a bike. Cody encouraged Aaron to try a downhill mountain bike race. In his very first race, Aaron finished 3rd! After that, he started racing downhill seriously and quickly joined the Yeti Cycles team.
It was amazing how fast Aaron became famous in the international World Cup scene. He had only been riding downhill for 8 months! Many people saw him as a hero for American downhill racing. His 10th place finish at the Mont Sainte-Anne World Cup in 2008 was the first time an American had placed in the top 10 since 2004.
Winning Championships
Aaron has won the United States National Championships for Downhill eight times. He won in 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017.
In 2011 and 2012, Aaron Gwin was almost unbeatable in the UCI World Cup downhill series.
- In 2011, he won 5 out of 7 World Cup races.
- In 2012, he won 4 out of 6 World Cup races.
The year 2013 was tough for Aaron. He had some unexpected poor results and even crashed into a tree at the World Championships.
Overcoming Challenges
Aaron's racing got better in 2014. He won one World Cup race and the USA National Championships. This showed he was recovering from his 2013 problems. However, he had some bad luck with his bike.
Famous Race Moments
- In 2014, at the Leogang World Cup, his tire went flat right as he left the start gate!
- In 2015, at the same Leogang World Cup, his chain broke at the start line. He raced the entire course without being able to pedal and still managed to win! This was an incredible moment in mountain biking history.
Aaron continued his success, winning the overall UCI Mountain Bike World Cup series again in 2015, 2016, and 2017. This brought his total World Cup overall titles to five!
Aaron's Riding Style
Aaron's unique riding style comes from his past experiences. His time racing motocross helped him develop great skill and control. His BMX racing background also taught him how to ride smoothly. This helped him succeed in other types of races like Dual Slalom and Mountain Cross.
