About Abdelaziz al-Hilu
Early Life and Education
Abdelaziz al-Hilu was born in a place called Al-Faydh Umm Abdullah. This area is in South Kordofan, Sudan. He grew up and went to school in the Nuba Mountains. He later studied Economics at the University of Khartoum and finished his studies in 1979.
His Role as a Leader
Al-Hilu is known as one of the most successful military leaders of the SPLA/M. He worked with another important Sudanese leader, John Garang. Their goal was to create a Sudan where everyone is treated fairly and has a say in how the country is run. They wanted a Sudan that is democratic and free for all its people.
He ran for governor of South Kordofan but lost the election. His group, the SPLA, said the election was not fair. He has been involved in fighting against the Sudanese Armed Forces in different conflicts, including the Second Sudanese Civil War and the South Kordofan conflict.
Working Towards Peace
After the Sudanese Revolution, al-Hilu announced a temporary stop to fighting. This was to give peace talks a chance to succeed. He later extended this ceasefire.
On September 3, 2020, he reached an important agreement with the transitional government. This agreement aimed to separate religion from the government. It also aimed to ensure that no one would be treated unfairly because of their background. He also asked for former President Omar al-Bashir's armed groups to be removed. He also wanted the Sudanese military to be reorganized. His group also called for the right for people in areas they control to decide their own future.
On March 28, 2021, al-Hilu signed a peace agreement with the Sudanese government. This happened in Juba, South Sudan. This agreement was a step towards creating a civil, democratic, and federal state in Sudan. It also promised freedom of religion and a single army to protect the country.
Role in Recent Conflicts
During the civil war in Sudan that started in 2023, al-Hilu was careful about joining the Tagadum coalition. He strongly believed that Sudan needed a government that is not based on religion. He saw this as key for the country's unity and stability.
He supported efforts to end the conflict. However, he stressed that Sudan's long-standing problems needed to be fixed. His forces in South Kordofan and Blue Nile focused on protecting citizens. They also worked to make sure help reached people who needed it.
In February 2025, al-Hilu supported the Rapid Support Forces's attempt to form a new government. This "parallel government" was being set up in Nairobi, Kenya. By July 2025, he was named the deputy leader of this new governing alliance. This alliance is led by the RSF's leader, Hemedti.
