Abderrahmane Hammad Zaheer (born May 27, 1977) is an important person from Algeria. He is currently the Minister of Youth and Sports. Before this, he was a famous track and field athlete. He was especially good at the high jump.
Hammad represented his country at the Summer Olympics in 2000. He won a bronze medal there. He also competed in the 2004 Athens Olympics. His best jump ever was 2.34 meters. This is still the record for Algeria in the high jump event. He stopped competing in sports in 2010. In 2020, he became the President of the Algerian Olympic Committee. Hammad was chosen as a minister on March 16, 2023.

Abderrahmane Hammad's Early Life and Sports Career
Hammad was born in a town called Dellys. He started his international sports journey as a junior athlete in 1994. He won silver medals in high jump at two big events. These were the African Junior Athletics Championships and the Pan Arab Junior Championships.
The next year, he won a gold medal at the African Junior Championships. In 1996, he won the Arab Junior title. He also competed in the 1996 World Junior Championships. However, he did not reach the final round there.
Becoming a Champion in Algeria
Hammad won his first Algerian national high jump title in 1997. He then won this title nine times in a row, until 2005. This shows how dominant he was in his home country.
In 1997, he also started to have success at the senior international level. He won silver medals at both the Pan Arab Championships and the 1997 Pan Arab Games.
Rising to the Top in Africa
In 1998, Hammad became the best high jumper in Africa. He won the African title at the 1998 African Championships in Athletics. He jumped 2.21 meters to secure this win. Because of this success, he was chosen to represent Africa at the 1998 IAAF World Cup. He finished in sixth place there.
He got even better in 1999. He finished second at the 1999 All-Africa Games, jumping 2.24 meters. He also won a silver medal at the 1999 Military World Games with a jump of 2.27 meters. That same year, he finished tenth at the 1999 World Championships in Athletics. He also set a new personal best of 2.32 meters in September.
Olympic Glory and Continued Success
The year 2000 was the most successful time in Hammad's career. First, he won his African title again at the 2000 African Championships in Athletics. This event was held in Algiers. He set a new personal best and a championship record by jumping 2.34 meters.
Then, he made his first appearance at the Olympic Games in Sydney. He reached the final round of the high jump. He cleared 2.32 meters, which was the same height as six other athletes. However, because of how ties are broken in high jump (called "count-back"), Hammad won the bronze medal. This was a huge achievement for him and for Algeria.
The next year, he won the high jump at the 2001 Mediterranean Games. He also finished ninth in the final at the 2001 World Championships in Athletics. In 2002, he won his third African high jump title in a row. He also won a bronze medal at the 2002 IAAF Grand Prix Final.
Later Career and Retirement
In 2003, Hammad's best jump was 2.30 meters. However, he did not make it to the final round at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics. He competed in the Olympics for a second time at the 2004 Games in Athens. But again, he did not reach the final. He did win the high jump title at the 2004 Pan Arab Games.
The year 2007 was his last year competing at the highest international level. He won a silver medal at the 2007 All-Africa Games. He also made his third and final appearance for Algeria at the World Championships. He retired from the sport in 2010.
Abderrahmane Hammad's Role in Politics
After his successful sports career, Abderrahmane Hammad moved into leadership roles. In 2020, he became the President of the Algerian Olympic Committee. This committee helps manage and promote Olympic sports in Algeria.
On March 16, 2023, Hammad was appointed as the Minister of Youth and Sports for Algeria. In this role, he is responsible for developing sports programs and activities for young people across the country. He helps make decisions about sports policies and supports athletes.
