Abdul Malek Ukil (born October 1, 1924 – died October 17, 1987) was an important leader in Bangladesh. He was the President of the Awami League, which is a big political party. He also served as the Speaker of the Parliament, a government minister, and a lawyer. He helped write the Constitution for Bangladesh and was one of the first members of the East Bengal Muslim Students League.

Early Life and Education

Abdul Malek Ukil was born in a village called Rajapur in the Noakhali District. His journey in education started at Noakhali Ahmadia High Madrasa. He did very well there, even earning a scholarship.

In 1947, he completed his IA Examination from Magura College. Later, in 1949, he earned his BA degree from the University of Dhaka. The next year, he got his MA degree and also finished his law studies (LL. B) from the same university.

After his studies, he became a lawyer. He started working at the Noakhali District Bar in 1952. Later, in 1962, he joined the Dhaka High Court Bar.

Political Journey

Abdul Malek Ukil was a founding member of the East Bengal Muslim Students League. This group played a role in student politics. From 1964 to 1972, he led the Awami League in the Noakhali district. He was also a member of the Awami League's main executive committee.

In 1966, he led a meeting of different political parties in Lahore, Pakistan. He was chosen to be a member of the East Pakistan Provincial Assembly three times: in 1956, 1962, and 1965. In 1965, he became the leader of the Awami League's group in the Assembly. He also led the combined opposition parties.

Role in Key Movements

Abdul Malek Ukil was arrested during the Six-Point Movement. This movement called for more rights for East Pakistan. In the 1970 general election, he was elected to the Pakistan National Assembly. He represented the Noakhali District.

When the Bangladesh Liberation War began, he joined the Relief and Rehabilitation Committee. This committee was part of the Mujibnagar Government. He even traveled to Nepal to gather support for Bangladesh's cause.

After Independence

After Bangladesh became independent, Abdul Malek Ukil helped write the country's Constitution. In 1972, he became the Minister of Health and Family Planning. This was in the government led by Sheikh Mujib.

In 1973, he was elected to the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) again. After this election, he became the Minister of Home Affairs. In 1975, he was chosen to be the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad. The Speaker is like the referee of the Parliament. He was elected to the Jatiya Sangsad one more time in 1986. At that time, he became the deputy leader of the opposition party.

Family Life

Abdul Malek Ukil was married to Sabura Khatun. They had seven children together. They had two sons, Gulam Mohiuddin Latu and Baharuddin Khelon. They also had five daughters: Fatema Begum (Ruby), Amena Begum (Baby), Nurun Nahar (Lily), Nurunnesa (Maya), and Lima Malek.

Death

Abdul Malek Ukil passed away on October 17, 1987. He was 63 years old. He died in Dhaka at the Shaheed Suhrawardy Hospital.
