Abejorral is a town and municipality in the Antioquia Department, Colombia. It is part of the Eastern Antioquia region. Abejorral shares its borders with several other towns. To the north are Montebello, La Ceja, and La Unión. To the east is Sonsón. The Caldas Department is to the south. Finally, to the west are Santa Bárbara and Montebello. In 2018, the town had a population of 17,599 people.
A Glimpse into History
Abejorral was founded in 1805 by José Antonio Villegas. However, some people believe it was founded a bit later, in 1811. That year, the land titles were officially given to the people living there.
Abejorral is one of the oldest municipalities in the Antioquia area and in Colombia. It is famous for its old colonial-style homes. These homes are so important that they are part of the Historical National Registry.
What Makes Abejorral Special?
Abejorral is a great place for outdoor adventures. Its hilly landscape is perfect for hiking and cycling. You can enjoy amazing views of rivers and valleys. Some spots are even great for wild camping, especially along the Arama River or the Aures River.
Visitors often find unique attractions here. Two popular spots are "La Casa en el Aire" (The House in the Air) and the "Aures River Waterfall." These places offer special experiences for tourists.

Most of Abejorral is like a living museum. The old buildings that have lasted for many years make the town feel like it's "stuck" in the colonial era. Because of its preserved architecture, a part of the municipality has been declared a National Monument.
