Aberlady Bay facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Aberlady Bay is a beautiful coastal area in East Lothian, Scotland. It's located between the villages of Aberlady and Gullane.

This special place became the UK's very first Local Nature Reserve (LNR) in 1952! This means it's protected to help nature thrive. East Lothian Council Rangers help look after the bay.

The Scottish Ornithologists' Club has its main building, Waterston House, right here. From there, you can enjoy amazing views of the bay and its wildlife.

Aberlady Bay is also part of two cool walking routes. It's on the John Muir Way, a long path stretching from Fisherrow to Dunglass. Plus, it's part of the North Sea Trail, a huge network of paths connecting seven different countries!

Old Wrecks in the Bay

Aberlady Bay is home to some interesting old shipwrecks. These wrecks tell stories of the past.

Fishing Boats

Near Kilspindie, you can find the remains of eight old fishing boats. These boats are from the 1800s or early 1900s. They are now protected as special historic sites.

Submarine Training Wrecks

You can also see two wrecks of special submarines called XT-craft. These were training versions of the X craft mini-submarines.

In 1946, these XT-craft were brought to the bay. They were tied to a concrete block and used for target practice by Royal Air Force planes.

The wrecks of these submarines are usually closer to the water when the tide is low. It's important to know that the tides in Aberlady Bay can rise very quickly. Always be careful and aware of the tides if you visit!
