Discovering the Festival
The festival started in 2011. Its main goal was to teach people about the fishing industry in Cardigan Bay. It also wanted to celebrate and share local food and drinks.
What Happens at the Festival?
The festival is held on the promenade in Aberystwyth. You can find many stalls selling food made right there in the area. Local chefs and even some famous Michelin starred chefs have shown how to cook. The Aberystwyth Farmers Market also joins in. They even won an award for Best Food Market in 2014! The festival also helps young people who are starting their own food businesses.
Fun Activities and Guests
Many exciting things happen at the festival. The Aberystwyth Surf Life Saving Club has given demonstrations. You can also watch fishing and fly-tying shows. There are art and craft stalls, plus fun activities for kids. Go-karts and an aquarium with local fish have also been part of the fun.
The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales has organized dolphin watching trips. They also lead seashore safaris to explore the beach. Other groups like the RNLI (who run the Aberystwyth Lifeboat Station), Aberystwyth Beach Buddies, RSPB, and St John Ambulance also take part.
Cragen the Sea Monster
In 2018, a special guest visited the festival. It was "Cragen the Sea Monster"! This huge monster was 20 meters long. It was made from waste plastic. Cragen traveled around the Welsh coast to encourage people to keep the sea plastic-free.
A theater group called Small World Theatre created Cragen. They made it for Wales' "Year of the Sea" celebration. The monster was inspired by an old drawing. It came from a book called Historia Animalium. This book was written in the 1500s by a scientist named Conrad Gesner. It had pictures of many sea creatures.
Why the Festival Started
The festival was created to highlight the fishing industry in Cardigan Bay. This area has a good supply of fish and shellfish. The festival was started by local groups. These included Aberystwyth Sea Anglers and the Cardigan Bay Fisherman’s Association.
The festival also connects with Ceredigion’s history of sea travel. A long time ago, in 1900, many ships were registered in Aberystwyth harbor. About 900 people worked with these ships.
Because the local community guides the festival, visitors can meet many interesting people. They can talk directly with fishermen, lifeboat crews, and surf lifesavers.
