Early life
Taron Egerton was born in Birkenhead, England, on November 10, 1989. His mother worked in social services, and his father ran a small hotel near Liverpool. Both of his parents are from Liverpool.
His parents divorced when he was two years old. He moved with his mother to Anglesey, an island in Wales. When he was 12, they moved to the town of Aberystwyth, also in Wales. After moving, he felt lonely because he missed his childhood friends.
He started acting when he was 15. He said he was interested in acting, but also wanted to meet new people and make friends. He later studied at the famous Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and graduated in 2012. Even though he was born in England, Egerton feels he is Welsh and can speak both Welsh and English.
Career
First Roles and the Kingsman Movies
Egerton's career began on stage in a play called The Last of the Haussmans in London in 2012. After a role in the TV series Lewis, he got his big break. He was cast as the main character in the movie Kingsman: The Secret Service.
In the Kingsman movies, he played Gary "Eggsy" Unwin, a young man who is recruited into a secret spy agency. The first movie came out in 2015 and was a huge hit. Critics said it was "fun, stylish and subversive," and it made over $400 million worldwide. This role made Egerton famous.
In 2016, he was nominated for the BAFTA Rising Star Award. That same year, he played the real-life ski-jumper Eddie the Eagle in the movie Eddie the Eagle. He also voiced Johnny, a singing gorilla, in the animated movie Sing.
He returned as Eggsy in Kingsman: The Golden Circle in 2017. In 2018, he starred in the movies Billionaire Boys Club and Robin Hood. These films were not as successful. Egerton later said that Robin Hood turned out differently than he expected.
Success with Rocketman and Other Projects
In 2019, Egerton starred as the famous singer Elton John in the musical movie Rocketman. To prepare for the role, he learned how to play the piano and sang all the songs live during filming. The movie was a success, and critics loved his performance. For his role as Elton John, Egerton won a Golden Globe Award. He was also nominated for a BAFTA Award and a Grammy Award for the movie's soundtrack.
In the same year, he did voice acting for the animated series Moominvalley and the fantasy series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. In 2021, he returned as the voice of Johnny the gorilla in Sing 2.
In 2022, Egerton returned to the stage in a play in London's West End. He also starred in and was an executive producer for the TV series Black Bird. In the show, he played Jimmy Keene, a man who goes to a high-security prison to get information from another prisoner. His performance earned him a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award.
The next year, he played video game designer Henk Rogers in the movie Tetris. The film tells the story of how the famous video game was brought to the world. In 2024, he starred in the Netflix thriller Carry-On as a TSA agent who is blackmailed by a terrorist. The movie became one of the most-watched English-language films on Netflix.
