Abhay Ganpatrai Bharadwaj (born 2 April 1954 – died 1 December 2020) was an Indian lawyer who became a politician. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha, which is one of the two houses of the Indian Parliament, at the time of his death. He was a leader in the Bharatiya Janata Party, a major political party in India. From his college days, he was involved with student and political groups. He also ran for elections to the Gujarat Legislative Assembly in 1995, but he did not win.
Early Life and Education
Abhay Bharadwaj was born on 2 April 1954 in Uganda. His family lived there at the time. In 1969, his family moved to India because of a civil war in Uganda. He later studied law and became a lawyer.
Career as a Lawyer
Abhay Bharadwaj started his work as a lawyer in 1980. He joined the Bar Council of Gujarat, which is a group that looks after lawyers in the state of Gujarat. He worked on many important legal cases during his career.
Political Journey
Abhay Bharadwaj was also a member of the 21st Law Commission of India. This is a group that helps the government make new laws. He helped with important laws like the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019. He also worked on ideas for a Uniform civil code, which aims to have one set of laws for all citizens, no matter their religion.
The government also chose him to be on a special committee. This committee helped pick a leader for the central government's industrial court. On 22 July 2020, he officially became a member of the Rajya Sabha as a politician from the BJP party.
His Passing
Abhay Bharadwaj passed away on 1 December 2020 in Chennai. He died from problems caused by COVID-19. This happened during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic in India.
