Abla is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the Almería province in Andalusia, which is in southeast Spain. It's a place with a long history, dating back to ancient times.

Abla's Ancient History

Many people believe Abla is the same place as Abula, a town mentioned by an ancient Greek writer named Ptolemy. He wrote about it in his book Geographia, which was like an old map and geography guide.

Ptolemy said Abula was in a part of Spain called Bastetania. This area was home to an ancient Iberian tribe. Another city, Ávila, might also be the ancient Abula, but it could also be a different old town called Obila.

Abla and Early Christianity

Abla is known as one of the very first cities in Hispania (which is what Spain was called long ago) to become Christian. This happened thanks to Saint Secundus.

Saint Secundus was one of the "Seven Apostolic Men". These were Christian leaders who were chosen in Rome by important saints like Peter and Paul. They were sent to spread Christianity across Spain.

There was also another early bishop of Abula named Iulius, who lived around 100 AD. After these early leaders, not much more is known about other bishops from this time.

What is a Titular See?

Today, Abula is no longer a place where a bishop lives and leads a church. Instead, it's called a Latin titular bishopric by the Catholic Church.

This means it's a special historical title given to a bishop, usually one who helps a main bishop or works in the Vatican. It's like a way to remember the important history of Abula in the early Christian church. The title was brought back in 1969.

How Many People Live in Abla?
