Abraham Lucas Hoagland (born March 24, 1797 – died February 14, 1872) was an important early leader in the Mormon faith. He was also a pioneer who helped start two cities in the USA: Royal Oak, Michigan, and Salt Lake City, Utah.

Early Life and New Beginnings

Abraham Hoagland was born on March 24, 1797, in Hillsborough Township, New Jersey. He learned the skill of a blacksmith, which means he worked with metal.

Later, he moved to Michigan. There, he became a successful blacksmith and farmer. He even helped to settle the area that is now known as Royal Oak. In 1841, while living in Michigan, he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Helping His Community

In 1843, Abraham Hoagland moved his family to Nauvoo, Illinois. Here, Joseph Smith, the founder of the church, made him an elder. An elder is a leader in the church.

Later, in Winter Quarters, Nebraska, he became a bishop. A bishop is a local church leader who helps guide a group of members.

Abraham Hoagland also served his community in other ways. In 1853 and 1857, he was chosen as an alderman for Salt Lake City. An alderman is like a city council member who helps make decisions for the city.

In 1851, he became the bishop of the 14th ward in Salt Lake City. A ward is a local congregation, or group of church members. He chose Phoebe, who was Wilford Woodruff's first wife, to lead the ward's first Relief Society. The Relief Society is a women's organization in the church that helps others.

His Family Life

Abraham Hoagland had a large family. In 1847, he married Agnes Taylor, who was the younger sister of John Taylor, a future church president. They later divorced in 1861.

Abraham Hoagland was the grandfather of Abraham H. Cannon. He was also the father-in-law of William Whitaker Taylor and George Q. Cannon. He passed away from pneumonia on February 14, 1872, in Salt Lake City.
